My Personalized Learning Environment (

is a home- or classroom-based intervention aimed at raising student engagement and motivation through the use of youth's individual interests and preferences. The major goal of MYPLEARN is to make learning both fun and educational. Educational research indicates that a student's motivation to learn will increase when students are given choices and allowed to work at their own pace and are able to choose their own reading or difficulty levels.  The MYPLEARN website can be used in schools, after-school programs, as homework assignments, or for parents interested in homeschooling their curious children. The MYPLEARN intervention can be used for independent study or as a whole-class activity.  Parents and teachers working with students who have been diagnosed with ADHD, emotional-behavior disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorders, or learning disabilities may find the intervention helpful. Also, students who are gifted (GATE) can use this personalized learning website for enrichment activities.

The MYPLEARN site consists of a curated collection of more than 300 teacher-selected websites that are divided into categories roughly by career type. The site is designed for elementary school (primary grades) students in grades Kindergarten through sixth  (though middle school students may also benefit) and curriculum materials for many reading  levels and abilities are included. Using this website intervention can be viewed as a form of student-centered instruction, individualized learning, personalized learning, or independent study.  Teachers and parents can also use it to help students conduct research and find  for animal reports, country reports, book reports, or collaborative classroom projects. There are also lists of kid-friendly search engines, dictionaries, thesauri (thesauruses), and links to other reference materials located in the Conventional Section.  For more information, including research citations, please click on the Background and Uses link below.

The webmaster's theory behind the MYPLEARN intervention is that all children have several needs that should  be met in order to make advances in child development, and to feel competent and successful. This theory is an extension of Self-Determination theory - an educational psychology and motivation theory focusing on people's intrinsic motivation to learn. The webmaster also ascribes to Person-Environment Fit theory, which focuses on obtaining optimal mental/physical health by minimizing the discrepancy between a person's preferred (ideal) and perceived environments.

Students' academic, behavioral, emotional, and sensory needs can be met through:

  * The use of websites that match each student's interests and choice of subject matter

  * Self-paced progress including level of difficulty through self-selection

  * Increasing a sense of accomplishment

  * Providing the ability to share one's opinions (social needs) through writing reviews

  * Providing a writing platform for an audience of classroom peers, family, and others

  * Exposing  students to multi-sensory multimedia materials, immediate feedback,

and providing fine-motor sensory stimulation through mouse use.

  * Improving student's behavior by providing high-interest materials that reduce the

desire to disrupt others and increasing student's attention and focus.
